what happened to sites last visited?
In the previous version of Firefox next to the back and forward navigation arrows was a triangle that, when clicked on, would give a drop-down menu of the last sites I visited in descending order. This was really useful because it let me go to the first page in a sequence without having to hit Back 8 times. This has disappeared with Firefox 8.0. How do I get it back?

That drop-marker disappeared several versions ago. You can do one of the following:
- right-click the Back/Forward button for a drop down list
- Install this add-on show a drop-marker: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/backforward-dropmarker/

Is there a "Last visited"? I would just use the History sidebar ("Ctrl+H"), and I keep it sorted by last visited through the View menu in the sidebar.
See How do I modify contents of "Most Visited" in Menu Bar | Firefox Support Forum | Firefox Help for information on "Smart Bookmark Folders" which are bookmarks that look like folders after Firefox is restarted and are actually database inquiries.
Read the question carefully: "...without having to hit Back 8 times..."
