The above answer 554133 says: The 'Status message cache' option of mailtweak has a user-defined display time for the status bar. Tested and working in TB 24 & 30. The "Status message cache" link points to mailtweak.mozdev.org When I try to reach mozdev, org, I get the message that Firefox cannot establish a connection. I have no problems reaching any other web site. I use Firefox 29.0.1 running on a MacBook Pro under OSX 10.9.3 (Mavericks) Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.
The mozdev site is down at the moment, but a quick search finds that the installation file is available at this mirror:

Download mailtweak-1.0pre10.xpi and install it according to these instructions. (You may have to first install another add-on as explained in the cited post.)

Thanks for the mirror site info. I downloaded mailtweak-1.0pre10.xpi and installed per instructions. I also had to install the other add-on to disable compatibility checking. I tried setting the display of status messages to longer times (30 seconds, 60 seconds, 120, seconds, even 300 seconds) but the message still flashes and disappears almost instantly. I did restart Thunderbird after each change in display times.
It works fine here with a 2 sec. option, so maybe you have another add-on that is causing it to not perform properly. Note also that by clicking the status bar, the cached messages can be viewed.
I have not installed any other add-ons , Also, clicking the status bar does not show any message related to saving drafts, There are other status messages listed.
Thanks for your help. I am about ready to give up on this.
this is what is says.... is it worth any real effort at all?
Well, the truth us that I don't care whether I see the message but it really irritates my husband who has exactly the same Thunderbird behavior on his MacBook. I was looking for a solution for him. I think I will just let this go for now and wait to see if anything changes with the next upgrade. Thanks to you both for trying to help.
