I'm on a MAC OS X version 10.9.4 Firefox browser version 31.0 I have no Firewall set up I have no security software or virus protection software

Since my browser automatically updated to Firefox version 31.0 I cannot access: google. com or facebook.com

Also, when I type in a url into the address bar and then hit the <return> button the url I type (ex: google.com or facebook.com) disappears and the previous url in the address window pops up.

Please help.

So I restarted Firefox, cleared all cookies, started in safe mode, disabled IPv6 and nothing worked.

I turned off my MAC. Let it and myself take a long break and then I restarted my MAC at home (I had been at a cafe suing the cafe's WiFi when I encountered the problem) and lo and behold the problem is fixed.

Sometimes technology is crazy.

Thank you all for your suggestions and help, wish I knew exactly what fixed the issue but at least it is fixed.

Have a great Friday and a great weekend.

Can you try to start Firefox in Safe Mode to see if Firefox works properly with no error? You can start Firefox in Safe Mode below:

  • Windows/Mac: Go to Help > Restart with add-ons disabled
  • Linux: Run firefox -safe-mode in the Terminal/Konsole

If Firefox opens up fine with no problems, it's probably one of your extensions that's causing the issue. You can re-enable your add-ons one by one until you find the one that causes the issue upon being re-enabled.

I tried starting in safe-mode and the problem persisted. Solution did not work.

So you can access other sites?

I can access other sites but I currently cannot access Google.com or Facebook.com. I am unsure what other sites I cannot access because I have not tried every site.

Being unable to access google.com is a major issue as is not being able to access facebook.com

I know this is a bit cliche, but you HAVE turned your Mac off and back on again, right?

Anyway, are Parental Controls or something turned on on your Mac? I'm assuming you got it from a retailer - It's not a company mac or something? Can other browsers (Namely Safari) access Google and Facebook?

You can try these steps in case of issues with web pages:

You can reload web page(s) and bypass the cache to refresh possibly outdated or corrupted files.

  • Hold down the Shift key and left-click the Reload button
  • Press "Ctrl + F5" or press "Ctrl + Shift + R" (Windows,Linux)
  • Press "Command + Shift + R" (Mac)

Clear the cache and cookies only from websites that cause problems.

"Clear the Cache":

  • The image "new fx menu" does not exist. > Options/Preferences> Advanced > Network > Cached Web Content: "Clear Now"

"Remove Cookies" from sites causing problems:

  • The image "new fx menu" does not exist. > Options/Preferences > Privacy > "Use custom settings for history" > Cookies: "Show Cookies"

Try to disable IPv6 (check for other possible causes as well).
