I think I may have misconfigured a protocol:// → external handler association for a user.

I've looked at the mozillazine article about registering protocols, and none of the about:config entries for the protocol in question exist. The gconf tree has the correct setting for the protocol in question (invokes the correct command). But for this one user, when I click on links for this protocol, nothing happens.

The first time I tried it, I got a dialog box and entered something, but I'm not sure it was correct one: The name of the protocol doesn't show up under mimeTypes.rdf any more (I removed its entries from there) and is not found in userprefs.js either (no changes made by me, it was alreasdy like that).

It does show up in a couple of the sqlite files but I don't think those are related.

I tried creating the network.protocol-* entries in about:config from the mozillazine article but even after a restart they didn't appear to change anything.

Any clues?

You can check network.protocol-handler.external.* prefs that reference this protocol on the about:config page.

You can open the about:config page via the location/address bar. You can accept the warning and click "I'll be careful" to continue.

As I stated in the question, I'd read that article and already tried the about:config recipes. There were no entries related to the protocol in question. In any case, the problem (on that machine) seems to have resolved itself, I was once again prompted for the application to use and got it right this time.
