Usually when I reply to an email the correct address is used as the From: address in the reply. There is one situation where it isn't working as I would hope.

I subscribe to some newgroups. I send a message to the newsgroup using the email address of aaaaaa@a.com. When someone replies to my email on the newsgroup, their reply comes to my aaaaaa@a.com account and I use a filter to automatically put it in a subfolder of Local Folders. So far so good.

When I am reading this email in the subfolder of Local Folders and then click on Reply, it doesn't use aaaaaa@a.com as the From: address, it insists on using zzzzzz@z.com as the From: address. What is weird is that zzzzzz.com is a valid account in Thunderbird, but it isn't the one the email was sent to. It isn't even the account set as my default in Thunderbird.

Is there any way to get Thunderbird to use the address that the email was sent to in this situation as the From: address?

Thanks! Bill

Zeno,

Thanks! I'll give this a try. Is it normal behavior for Thunderbird to use an email address other than the email address the email was sent to in this type of reply? This add-on may be a workaround, but it seems like there is a bug in Thunderbird.

You'd expect it to look at the To: address in a message when replying, and use that. (Question: What if the message was sent to two or more of your email addresses, all using To:? Which one should it select to reply from?)

I think it works tolerably well if messages are filed into folders within the relevant account. I think it is less successful when messages end up in Local Folders, or are moved into folders in other accounts. For instance, I keep messages between me and my sons in a gmail account, regardless of which of my accounts the messages were addressed to.

That it is a frequently-encountered problem seems to be confirmed by there having been several identity-management add-ons, e.g.

Correct Identity Identity Chooser Virtual Identity Folder Account Flexible Identity

Zenos,

Folder Account worked like a charm.
