Greetings!

Maybe I'm missing a point here, but I don't seem to be able to properly delete attachments. An "echo" of the attachment seems to remain.

To reproduce: - On the mail with the attachment, right-click the name of the attached file at the bottom of the mail. - There is a warning, saying that I can't undo the delete. Hit OK - The file itself is deleted, but the mail still shows as having an attachment (which cannot be opened) with the name "Deleted:" followed by the name of the old attachment.

Further information: - I have tried on two accounts, Gmail and T-Online (in Germany), using IMAP - I also have an IMAP connection to the T-Online account in Outlook. When I delete the attachment here, it is fully deleted, as reflected in Thunderbird when the account synchronises. - Thunderbird Version 60.4.0, 32 bit, running on WIndows 10

How do I configure Thunderbird to properly remove attachments?

Thank you!

Tim (p.s. Thunderbird newbie!)

When you delete or detach an attachment, it is permanently removed from the message. The 'echo' is there in case you need to determine which attachments, that may have been saved or detached to a location outside of TB, were sent with the message. It's a record of the deletion - there is no remnant of the actual attachment.

Thank you!

Is there a way not to have this behaviour, i.e. simply delete the attachment and have no record of it?

The record of the deleted attachment is itself stored as an attachment, which is also visible as an attachment on other clients as an attachment.

I can see why some may find this behaviour helpful for a few use cases, but I'd prefer to have the option of the simpler delete function.

I'm not aware of any way to eliminate the record of attachments as a default. There are add-ons for altering the source, or content, of a message, if you want to delete the record manually.

OK. Shame. I'll have to find another mail client then. I was looking for an alternative to the current web interface for my mail that is missing many functions I need, including deleting attachments, and hoped Thunderbird would be it.

Unfortunately the extensions that may have helped are either unsupported in the current version or have been blocked, e.g. these here.

Thank you for your help and speed of response anyway! Much appreciated. At least I have clarity :)

For the benefit of others reading this, the message source can be edited with the Header Tools Lite add-on, which is compatible with TB 60.
