Hi. Installing Firefox on Linux merely involves extracting the content of the tar.bz2 to its installation folder. To allow easy updating, this can be a firefox folder in your home directory (~/firefox). More info:

The internal Firefox updates like you may have experienced in Firefox on Windows or macOS is only on the official Linux tarball builds of Firefox from Mozilla. A version of Firefox installed by way of snap, flatpak, deb, rpm etc is updated in the package manager for it.

The .tar.bz2 is not an update for the Ubuntu package build of Firefox you have as it should installed in a separate place and not mixed with the older version. Where ever you put the untared Firefox folder in, make sure the Firefox folder has read/write permissions for the user to get Firefox updates. A easy way as said is to have the Firefox folder in Home.

Oh and the old Ubuntu 18.04 LTS reached EOL in support as of May 31, 2023 as to why you may have been stuck with Firefox 112.0.1 as last Firefox package update. The most current Firefox you may have gotten if Firefox package updates were continued right up to that date may have been Firefox 113.0.2 as it was released May 23, 2023.

Thanks for your help. Merely do this or that, should not be used in instructions ! I had already downloaded and extracted the zip file into a separate folder. The best hint would have been -

After extracting the zip file, find and click on the "firefox" executable file.

I can now run the 112 version and the 130 Firefox separately. Now I should delete the 112 version. How should that be done ? Have patience, I am 73 !
