The forum was no help, so maybe a coder can help here:

I want to hide the unsorted bookmarks folder in the library. I managed to hide it in the drop down menu, but not the library.

I've Googled this and found a number of old requests on this, but none of the so-called solutions actually work. Any coders know how to do this, or know any add-on that can help?

Hi aubbieed The unsorted bookmarks folder is the default folder for newly bookmarked webpages. This may break the functionality of the bookmarks. If you would like to build your own build of Firefox you can with these instructions: https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/d.../Build_Instructions

How to do it is up to you. Functionality in the code: [^\0*%24&hitlimit=&tree=mozilla-central]

Preference to hide or display: https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/d.../Overlays look for bookmarks.css

I hope this will put you in the right direction.

It is not possible to hide the Unsorted folder in the Library with code in userChrome.css and it would be best to leave this alone and be satisfied to remove it in the menu drop-down lists.

Firefox stores bookmarks in this folder by default if you click the star on the Navigation Toolbar, so those wouldn't be accessible at all if you would hide this folder.

I've been using Firefox since v1 and I have never had anything in the unsorted folder as I don't use the star. In fact, with v29, I actually removed the star from the menu.

I just think it's stupid to have that folder when the majority of users never touch it. This reminds me of Google forcing people to use tabbed browsing with their piece-of-crap Chrome browser.

There are three folders at the root level and those are fixed.

The items that you see in the Library are treechildren and not individual items like in the menu drop-down list and that makes it impossible to address them with a specific selector. This is the same in the sidebar.

That's all Greek to me.

Anyhow, I understand your explanation that it can't be done, but simply put, this just lacks any common sense.

In all my years of using Firefox, I've met hundreds of people, online and in real life, that also have Firefox as their browser of choice. Of all those people, only one actually told me that he used the unsorted bookmark folder.

So, the question is, if so few people use it, why keep it as a permanent fixture? Google did that with tabbed browsing in Chrome and alienated the hell out of a lot of people that don’t like that feature.

Firefox is supposed to be about innovation and customization, but here is one issue they’ve failed to address.

In regards to software products, both Microsoft and Google have force-fed certain features to consumers with the end result being pissed off people looking for an alternative product.

And now, Mozilla is in danger of doing the same thing. From what I’ve seen, most people don’t like the new Australis interface. I didn’t like it either, but after I found a way to hide that butt-ugly hamburger button, I was okay with it. However, they’ve still failed to address the window bug that Australis created with it not being able to open new windows that are maximized.

It just seems like Mozilla is going down the same rabbit hole as Microsoft and Google. I hope not, because users may mount a mass exodus to another browser.

Since you claim to be using Firefox since v 1.0, when did that Unsorted Bookmarks folder become a problem for you? Are you aware of when that Unsorted Bookmarks folder first appeared in Firefox? Like in which version?

Hint, when did the Menu Editor stop working with anything related to Bookmarks and History?

the-edmeister - I am aware of "when" it appeared and it's always been a problem for me, but it was several years before I realized that it may be possible to remove/hide it.

As for your last question, I get the impression that you are trying to be a smart-ass. Why?

For me, this issue isn't about functionality, it's about aesthetics and not having an annoying folder that almost no one uses.

You normally do not use the unsorted folder directly. That folder is meant to be used as a kind of scratchpad to store links to pages that you find interesting by clicking the star. A possible occasion is when you do research about a subject and click on links to open pages and use the star to make a note of a promising looking page (i.e. bookmark the link), but you aren't sure that you want to keep it as there might be better pages that you come across later. If you aren't interested in using that folder then best is to just ignore it (it is at the bottom of the list). There are likely more features in Firefox that you do not use (regularly) and no one would use all features that Firefox comes with, but only use the ones you can use. Of course new features get added all the time when new versions are released and you have to get used to that. We all have that problem when you notice that things get added that you do not need.
