The V9 toolbar & search engine has been acquired against my wishes. it is Chinese in origin & purports to summarise all the findings of other search engines to help one focus searches. It comes loaded with adware (Supra Savings) which pop-up, take up screen space & interrupt processes I am trying to complete. I have done the following procedures, but cannot locate the V9 file & uninstall: - Pop up blockers & ad-blockers, ineffective; - Uninstalling procedures from Firefox, IE & Chrome, ineffective; - I have uninstalled IE & Chrome as I don't use them, no effect; - I have uninstalled all copies or Firefox & re-installed the latest version 31.0; no effect; - I have uninstalled & re-installed Evernote & FVD Speed Dial add-ons, no effect; - Fiddling with Options menus; no effect. V9 Toolbar & search engine keeps appearing as my homepage & the only way to get off the page is click on the Mozilla homepage icon, then click on Speed dial. Every time I have reset programmes, I loose my Speed dial settings, so have had to transfer all of them to Bookmarks, which is time consuming. I have also searched my Control Panel numerous times, deleted some unrecognised software to no effect & cannot find this V9 software listed anywhere. Before I installed the McAfee Total Protection software, I regularly used Firefox which quickly converted to Speed Dial. I searched the McAfee menus to try & block the V9 software, but again no luck; all very frustrating as I know it is slowing down Firefox.

It can be difficult to remove infections when innocent sounding programs sustain them, and it's frustrating when add-ons or hidden settings files override your settings. Here are some steps to clean up.

First, return to the Windows Control Panel, Uninstall a Program. Click the "Installed on" column heading to group the infections, I mean, additions, by date. This can help in smoking out undisclosed bundle items that snuck in with some software you agreed to install. Take out as much trash as possible here.

Then, in Firefox, open the Add-ons page using either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column, click Extensions. Then, if in doubt, disable (or Remove, if possible) unrecognized and unwanted extensions.

Often a link will appear above at least one disabled extension to restart Firefox. You can complete your work on the tab and click one of the links as the last step.

Next, you can restore the default home page, new tab page, and search engine (Google) using this one-click solution: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/ad.../searchreset/.

Finally, you can "mop up" remaining issues with the scanning/cleaning tools suggested in this support article: Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware.

In some cases, malware will leave behind special settings files that override your normal Firefox preferences at each startup. Try this article for steps to root that out: How to fix preferences that won't save.
