Thunderbird keeps attaching image files that I DON'T want attached, mainly, inserted images and background images. How do I put those images where they belong?
My question says it all: I try to insert an image in the middle of a message I'm composing and Thunderbird ATTACHES IT instead of placing it right where It belongs. Same with a background image. Thunderbird attaches it at the end, too, in the same dumb way it does with inserted images. So how do I get Thunderbird to do what I tell it to do?
Here's my email address to use in replying.

Sorry, I forgot to type in my email address: lifeform@sprintmail.com
Are you using HTML formatting?
How do you insert your pictures? Drag and drop, copy and paste, or via a menu option?
What version of Thunderbird? What OS? (Windows, Mac, LInux?)
What add-ons do you have?
Are you using HTML formatting?
Yes, I'm using HTML. You can't insert an image in a plain text message.

Via a menu option: 1. Click on Insert, Click on Choose file, Go find the file, click on Open.

38.2.0, Windows 7
What add-ons do you have?
None, as far as I know.
Some people don't use the word "insert" accurately.
I have just sent myself a message with a background image, and two images set in with the text and it all works fine.
What settings do you have under View|Message Body As?
Original HTML delivers as designed. Simple HTML removes the background image. All Body Parts lists the elements separately, which sounds close to what you describe. Plain Text offers the images as attachments without attempting to display their contents.
Mind telling me where the bleep I can find "View|Message Body As".

On the menu. You don't have a menu? Press <alt>.
Or through the Application Menu: [≡]|View|Message Body As
(Note you have to hover over View, don't click on it.)
You may be able to provoke the settings to appear by right-click on the toolbar or title bar.
