How do I attach the plus sign directly to the right end of the tab?

I just upgraded to 48.0 and the steps to open a new tab are not as convenient as in my previous version.

In my previous version (40.0? 43.0?) the "plus sign" always appeared "attached" to the right edge of whichever was the right-most tab on the line (i.e., not all the way at the extreme right end or left end of the line), and as I opened a new tab, the plus sign would just move to the right edge of the new tab, or if I closed a tab the plus sign would shift to the right edge of the previous tab.

How do I get the plus sign to work this way in 48.0 (i.e., as described in the paragraph above)?

(if it matters, I have 4 lines displayed at the top of the browser - Menu, Navigation, Bookmarks and Tabs - and the tabs are displayed on the lowest of these 4 lines. Also, I am using Classic Theme Restorer 1.5.5.2. And my previous version was set up the same way.)

Thanks for any help you can give me making the new version easier to use. Frank

It's possible that whatever add-on you use to customize the toolbar area had a little compatibility glitch with Firefox 48 and you've either tickled it into the correct location or there was an update in the background.

Either way, if the problem returns, it would be helpful to know what add-on it is and what version you have.

Type about:customizing<enter> in the address bar. In the new window, look for the icon. When you find it, hold down the left button on it, and move it to where you want it to be. You can move any of the icons you want from here, but some icons are locked in place.

There is also a Restore Defaults button at the bottom middle.

FredMcD - thank you for trying too help me.

When I type "about:customizing" (or about:customize") I get an error message saying "The address isn't valid" and I cannot move the plus sign.

If I access the toolbar customizing feature either by right-clicking on the toolbar, or through "view>toolbars>customize", I can use the left mouse button to move the plus sign to where I want it but as soon as I release the left mouse button, the plus sign jumps to the extreme end of the line (left end or right end, whichever is closest).

Any further suggestions are welcome.

Thanks again - Frank

I am trying to picture where exactly this plus sign jumps to;   could you possibly provide us with a screenshot   ?

Hi Happy112. Thank you also for trying to help me.

In trying to capture screen shots of the errant plus sign, I noticed that it is suddenly - and inexplicably - now working as I would like. I have no idea why it started to behave, and I guess I should find out so next time it gets out of sorts I can fix it.

Anyway, the two screen shots are below. The first one shows the plus sign at the far left end of the line the tabs are shown on. However, this time, when I tried to position it next to the right-hand tab so it would snap to the far right end of the line the tabs are shown on, instead it remained right where I left it - right where I've wanted it to remain! So I don't have a screen shot showing it at the far right hand end of the line. However, I included the second screen shot to show it positioned as I have been trying to get it - "attached" to the very right edge of the tab symbol - so you might recognize how I have been trying to get it to behave. (And I just tested it to be sure it isn't temporary - when I add a tab, the plus sign moves right next to the very right edge of the new tab and when I delete a tab, the plus sign moves right next to the right edge of the previous tab - exactly what I want it to do! I also tried the View>Toolbars>Customize to eliminate and reinstate the plus sign and it no longer jumps to the extreme left or right end of the line as it did in the past. 'Tis a puzzlement!)

I have no idea why it is suddenly behaving - perhaps it is afraid of what may happen to it now that I have called on the experts - or perhaps my computer is just in need of a good exorcism!

Anyway, thank you both for your efforts to help me. If you can tell me what I should do if this problem returns in the future, that would be appreciated.

Frank

Oops! - too many screen shots. Please examine the two on the left. Ignore the short one in the middle and the one on the right. Sorry - Frank

Being an internet novice all that I can come up with is:   fingers crossed    !!! I sure am glad that it's working the way it's supposed to be working now;   I looked at your screenshots and I must admit:   that was really weird   ! Best wishes from Happy112.

Hi Jscher2000. Thank you also for your reply.

You have a good point - when I upgraded to version 48 I suspect the system searched around and updated other things that I didn't notice. And now, of course, since it's working I can't "fix it"...

But if the problem returns I will post details on the add-ons, my various settings, preferences and so on.

For now, I will consider the problem solved (although by some mysterious force...) and in the absence of further suggestions I will just enjoy using it the way it is!

Thanks again to all! Have fun - and a relaxing (and hopefully not too hot) weekend. Frank
