Cannot copy message to IMAP sent folder , Thunderbird Hangs.
I am currently using thunderbird Version 52.6.0 (64 Bit) on PCLinuxOS. I am using shaw's IMAP server for the thunderbird setup, not an older POP server setup.
What was happening was that on larger messages which had a photo attached to the message, when copying the message to the sent folder, located on the IMAP server, thunderbird would hang, and you would just get "Copying message to Sent folder". This would continue forever.
I have found a workaround for this , which I would like to share with the mozilla support community.
The first step is to create a local folder named "Sent", in your local folder area.
Then go to preferences / account settings / Copies and folders and check other and specify "Sent on Local Folders" , for where a "Place a copy in:" is checked.
When sending a message out , thunderbird will now copy the message that it just sent to your "Local" "Sent" folder - and NOT copy it to the IMAP Sent folder which is located on the server
Then what you do, is create a message filter which runs on "Local folders".
It is setup so that it runs only after sending a message. (Only the 4th check box down from Apply filter when: needs to be checked off)
Match is set to "Match all Messages"
"Perform these actions:" is set to "Copy message to" Sent on t.bracken@shaw.ca , which is my sent folder on the IMAP server, it is not local to the computer.
The filter created will run after the message has been copied to the local "Sent" folder.
It will copy the message from the local "Sent" folder over to the Sent folder located on the IMAP server, getting around the hangup problem of thunderbird, which unsuccessfully tries to do the same thing.
I tried this out with bigger e-mails with photo's and it seems to get around the problem of hang ups from thunderbird. The only thing is that you end up with a duplicate local sent folder.

Further to the workaround. I was able to eliminate having to use a local "Sent" folder.
Read the original note above, and substitute the following for what it says:
Then go to preferences / account settings / Copies and folders and check other and specify "TRASH on Local Folders" , for where a "Place a copy in:" is checked.
It will copy the message from the local TRASH folder to the IMAP sent folder Add a second action to delete the message from the local TRASH area.
The message will end up in the Sent IMAP folder, and you will not have a copy of it anywhere else.

I suggest you file a bug, with a a log of the IMAP account involved in sending a mail and having it hang.
See logging https://wiki.mozilla.org/MailNews:Logging

Thanks Matt,
I'll help out the mozilla thunderbird developers by doing that.
When I first had the problem , I noticed that when I did a search on google about this , that there where quite a few hits that where on the mozilla support forms regarding this problem.
I'm just glad I was able to get a workaround for it so that I wasn't constantly running into it everytime I would send an attachment with a picture in it on an outgoing e-mail.
The problem might also be to do with the slow speed of my internet connection, because I am currently using shaws "Internet light" , which is about 120 kb per second of speed, which is not a high speed internet connection.
I noticed the problem seemed to only happen when I attached something which had some size to it, to the e-mail being sent, like a picture photo.
Cheers!
Tom
