If you really need Java Console, have you tried clicking the "Enable" button next to it in Add-ons > Extensions? Read the following before deciding to enable that extension.
There are also Java Console options in the Java Control Panel: https://www.java.com/en/download/help/javaconsole.xml
Java Console
Unless you do Java programming/development or debug Java applets on web pages, you do not need Java Console. Removing the Java Console extensions has no effect on the functioning of Java for web browsing. You can see, but not remove, the Java Console extensions in Add-ons > Extensions. Java Console extensions can be safely removed manually by following the instructions in this article:

I don't want to derail your thread, but the biggest tick off for me about this is that I had the box ticked not to update Firefox automatically. It updated anyway and rendered Java Console inactive. Now, I need to uninstall Firefox 6.0.1, install an older version, then re-install Java Console. On another PC, I had the auto install box ticked, but also the "warn me if this will disable any add-ons". It warned me, all right, AFTER it installed the update. Useless. Google Chrome is looking better every day.

Your reply does not answer the original poster's question.
For your information, I always keep the following settings and have never had an update automatically installed; I make the decision when to install using Help > About Firefox > Check for Updates
- all options checked under Options > Advanced > Update > "Automatically check for updates to:"
- select Options > Advanced > Update > "When updates to Firefox are found" > "Ask me what to do"
- See: Options window-Advanced panel-Update tab

Safebrower: You're right about not answering the original question. I said as much in my post. Since the OP did not ask a question, I didn't believe that I was off base. I apologize to the OP if I was.
As to your other comment to me, you'll see in my post that I did have FF set to notify me of updates, but not install them. That has worked fine in the past. It didn't work for this update.
gwilki:
The point is,
- The OP's original post was about Java Console not about automatic Firefox updates.
- The OP's original post in a thread in a forum does not necessarily need to be constructed as a question.
- In this thread it is quite clear that the OP is seeking information concerning the reason that Java Console is shown as incompatible.
- Forum etiquette dictates that you do not hijack someone else' s thread.
- The OP is always the owner of a thread and any responses should be in direct relation to the discussion/question/statement as stated in the OP's original post.
- If you have a different topic to discuss, always start a new thread/question
Something else that you have installed may be over-riding your update settings.
- Do you have something like Google updater installed as an Add-on?
- Do you have some separate application installed that automatically looks for updates to installed applications on your system?

Thanks gwilki for your quick reply. Not having a lot of tech expertise, I was concerned that I needed this to run some of my program You were right. I was just seeking information.
JJ70: I apologized once and I'll do so again, without reservation. As pointed out by Safebrowser in great detail, I did several things wrong in putting my 2 cents worth into your post. I'm sorry. It wont' happen again.
Safebrowser: Following your instructions, I won't reply to your two questions in this thread. That would simply add to my errors. If I need more info on this issue, I can, as you have instructed, "always start a new thread/question". I trust that this is satisfactory and does not violate net etiquette yet again.
I, too, am upset because my Java Console doesn't work with the most recent Firefox update (6.0.2). Recipefox needs Java Console to work and without it, I'm lost. I used Recipefox very often (at least everyday) and miss it something awful. Is there anything I can do until the next update? And there is NO enable button next to the extension, Java Console, for me to enable; nothing, nada. I'm using Windows 7 with Firefox and if nothing can be done, please consider making the next upgrade compatible with Java Console. After all, Recipefox is made by Firefox Moxilla. Thanks!
Hi JJ70:
According to the article here in the MozillaZine knowledgebase, the Java Console extension hasn't worked with Firefox since FF 3.6 and/or Java 6 Update 10. The extension for the Java Console was hidden in past FF versions, but for some reason the FF developers decided to show this extension as disabled in FF6.
If you wish, there is a thread here with instructions on how to remove the Java Console extension.
If you run the Java Installation Test and the test shows that your Java browser plugins are working correctly and up-to-date (currently Java 6 Update 27) then your Java installation should be okay.
