After I selected "Private Browsing" mode, I cannot stop it!? It says you can toggle on/off Private browse, But I tried everything and cannot stop the Private Mode from automatically starting when I open a new tab/ window? PLEASE someone tell me how to toggle out of this or just stop it!! I'd like the option of being able to toggle in and out of Private Mode when I want. But this function does not seem active or working? And I've tried changing to "Use custom settings for history" and unchecked the box for "Always use private browsing mode". But it is already unchecked and it is also grayed out and cannot click on it anyway. So when I open new tab it should NOT automatically open as HTTPS it should open "new tab" or "New Window" in HTTP: But it does not - always ends up in Private mode?? Please help me turn this off!! Thanks.

Private Browsing has nothing to do with HTTPS - secure websites.

Any chance that you have the HTTPS Everywhere extension installed? If so, disable it.

You can check the target line in the Firefox desktop shortcut (right-click: Properties) to make sure that nothing is appended after the path to the Firefox program.

What does it say on the about:config page about the browser.privatebrowsing.autostart pref (value and Status)?

You can open the about:config page via the location/address bar. You can accept the warning and click "I'll be careful" to continue.

I'm so sorry, but I'm not sure what "appended after the path" means? What am I looking for? And when I type in about:config what am I looking for? I'm so NOT Tech savvy that's why I thought Private Browsing would be good but only if I can toggle in and out- but seems once I selected it once it became permanent? and I can't seem to figure out how to stop it. :(

Again, I'm so sorry for being so knowledgeable about this new techy stuff? so when you say, "Private Browsing has nothing to do with HTTPS - secure websites.

Please tell me how do I check this and disable? I must have or someone else must have changed something? where do I check and undo what was done? so that I stop getting redirected to HTTPS: every site I go to anywhere for anything it automatically changes it from HTTP to HTTPS and I still go to that site but just as HTTPS?

You can paste browser.privatebrowsing.autostart in the search bar at the top of the about:config page or start typing until you see this pref.

Can you attach a screenshot of that section of the about:config page?

  • Use a compressed image type like PNG or JPG to save the screenshot
  • Make sure that you do not exceed the maximum size of 1 MB
