When I click on the add-ons under tools. I get a message that explains about add-ons and explains that when Thunderbird is connected to the internet I'll see all sorts of wonderful things. The problem is, Thunderbird is connected to the internet. I can view extensions, appearance and plug-ins but not add-ons.

Thunderbird also always says that I have the most recent version when it checks for updates not matter what version I have installed.

have you checked in your anti virus program (firewall part) that Thunderbird is allowed to access the internet to view those web pages (they are web pages).

When I check my firewall settings for allowing programs, Firefox appears but not Thunderbird. Is having Firefox selected sufficient for this?

No, they are completely separate programs

Why wouldn't Thunderbird be listed to be selected?

The incomprehensibility of the configuration options in security suites is mind boggling, however most have some option to ADD a program. For exact details about how to drive your security suite I suggest you contact the vendor. My experience is limited to NOD32

I was able to add Thunderbird to the allowed access list and I still get the same thing happening and get the when connected I'll see add-ons etc.

Yes and it made no difference.
