I recently upgraded my computer and re-installed Thunderbird with my several e-mail accounts. Somewhere, while setting up my various accounts, I used a comma (,) instead of a dot (.) in the account name; i.e. cxxx,xx@comcast.net instead of cxxx.xx@comcast.net. Now, when I try to send a message from that account I get the error message shown below. Receiving messages is not affected. My equipment is a Dell Optiplex 7010, 13th generation i7 CPU (x64), 16 Gb RAM, Windows 11 Pro, Thunderbird 128.1.1esr (64-bit). I cannot find a location or means to correct the comma vs. dot error anywhere in my Comcast account or in Thunderbird. What do you suggest? Thanks... Jim <jmcarp43@gmail.com>

How to create an image of what you see on monitor. Use the 'prt scr' key on keyboard. Open a simple image program like Paint Use Ctrl+V to put screendump into Paint - edit as required and save as a jpeg image file in a suitable eay to locate place eg: desktop Then in this forum use the Add images 'Browse' button to locate the saved jpg image file and clickon Open to upload.

The error message says : Login to server smtp.comcast.net with username carp,jm@comcast.net failed. The bit that says the server name - it says smtp meaning you are trying to send an email when it fails.

So you have to check the smtp setting you have for comcast account.

  • In 'Account Settings'
  • Scroll to bottom of left pane and look below Local Folders.
  • You will see 'Outgoing Server (SMTP)' - click on it.
  • On the right it will show you a list of all your outgoing servers.
  • Each mail account/email address will have it's own smtp server specifically for that email address.
  • starting at the top of the list, select each one in turn until you find the one that has the incorrect 'User Name' -
  • click on 'Edit'

Edit the following:

  • Description: Enter the full correct email address which should be the same as the 'User name' - this means you use that description to check the account is using the correct smtp.
  • User Name: edit the email address so it is corrected.
  • click on OK

Now check that mail account is using that smtp.

  • In Account Settings
  • In left pane - select the account name for the carp.jim comcast mail account
  • Look bottom right for it's Outgoing Server SMTP - it should display what you entered in the 'Description' field.
  • If yes it's using the correct one, then that's ok.
  • If no, it's pointing to something else then clickon the drop down and select the correct one where Description matches name/email address of account.

NOTE- DO NOT click on the 'Edit SMTP_Server' button or you may edit the wrong smtp - leave it alone :)

Finally exit Thunderbird. Wait a few moments for background preocess to complete and then restart Thunderbird. This ensures all updated information has been copied into preference files.
