since upgrading to version 4 i have had loads of problems - intermittently firefox will not save my open tabs and then on restarting multiple blank windows open.

I have searched lots of support items but not found a solution.

I have been disappointed with firefox 4 - every other version i have had has been great this however has been problematic so i am going back to a previous version.

Sync does not work, bookmarks have been duplicated, roboform no longer works, there is no right click new tab option - the list goes on.

It is possible that there is a problem with the files sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak in the Profile Folder

Delete sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak in the Profile Folder

  • Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Open Containing Folder

If you see files sessionstore-##.js with a number in the left part of the name like sessionstore-1.js then delete those as well.

Deleting sessionstore.js will cause App Tabs and Tab Groups to get lost, so you will have to create them again (make a note).

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.

See:

There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins"

If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile (be careful not to copy corrupted files)

I'm also having the problem of multiple blank windows opening on launch, plus tabs won't save. I've tried all the suggested fixes I've seen in various forums. I've deleted the sessionstore files again and again: the blank window problem returns. Re the tabs, I've got all the appropriate options checked to restore tabs and have gone into about: config many times--the relevant tab-save and warn-on-quit items are all marked true.

It's also frustrating that you can't save tab groups from session to session--that would help with the tab saving problem.

Hope there's a new release soon with these problems fixed--I'm seeing a lot of complaints on various tech support websites about them.

Firefox 4 saves the previous session automatically, so there is no longer need for the dialog asking if you want to save the current session.
Use "File > Exit" or "Firefox > Exit" if you want to restore multiple windows.
You can use "Firefox > History > Restore Previous Session" to get the previous session at any time.
There is also a "Restore Previous Session" button on the default about:home Home page.

Another possibility is to use:
