clearing history of some sites doesn't reset the "visited" color code, where else is the visit flagged?

when looking at page (particularly one from local disk) some links are highlighted as "visited" some are not. Most of the time, when I delete site's visits from the history, clear the cache - and do a forced reload of the page - the visit flags for that site are cleared (normal color again). Some links don't behave that way, as though they are flagged somewhere besides the history file. How do I get them to reset (without deleting my ~entire~ history file.)

If you visit a site, the links you click are marked visited based on the site the link points you to. For example, if you click a link on A.com that points to a.com, then clearing a.com from your history removes the visited links. But if you click a link on a.com that goes to b.com, then you have to clear b.com from your history to remove the visited indicator from a.com (or any site that links to b.com)
