Hi Wayne, Thanks for your reply. I deleted .msf files as suggested somewhere else and this seems to have solved the problem. Should I upgrade to 45.2.0? Reluctant to make any changes now that the app is being awesome again :)

Thanks, my bad, misread a post :) Will try this. Performance has improved since I deleted .msf files, but the app is still pretty much continually downloading "Sent" and "Important" files, among others. I deleted alot of old files from gmail, but still have 9Gb; should I do more?

I guess that depends on how many GB you want to come down to. Gmail doesn't make it easy to really get rid of stuff, so make sure you do empty the Trash at some point. Also make sure to compact folders in Thunderbird. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Compacting_folders

Thanks for your reply. No kidding about getting rid of stuff on gmail :( Trash is empty and folders are set to automatically compact. I am completely agnostic regarding storage; am gathering from your reply that T'bird should be able to handle 9GB without difficulty, so this is not one of the causes of the slow downloading problems I have. Fingers crossed that update solves this!

I have a mail profile that windows reports as 16.5Gb. Now it is not all mail. but while ever folders are kept to a reasonable size the total mail stored is largely irrelevant.
