Could you check whether Firefox is set to "Run as Administrator" on the shortcut's Compatibility tab?
To check for that, either:
- Desktop shortcut: right-click the icon, choose Properties
- Pinned taskbar icon: right-click the icon, right-click Mozilla Firefox, choose Properties
Windows 7 normally will select the Shortcut tab. Click the Compatibility tab. For best results, make sure no checkboxes are checked here. (Example screenshot attached.)
Somehow the shield went away after i installed firefox again. The problem I'm having now is it won't open. I can't get into firefox to reset or refresh it. when i click the icon it doesn't do anything.
Hopefully you also took the extra step of clearing the Compatibility tab if anything was set.
Could you check whether Firefox is stalled in the Windows Task Manager. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc, then activate the Processes tab. It might help to sort by the Image Name column. If you find firefox.exe there, right-click it and choose End Process to terminate it, then try the shortcut again. Any improvement?
Boot the computer in Windows Safe Mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen or hold down the Shift key) to see if that has effect.
Yes I did go into compatibility tab and everything is unchecked. I went into the task management and did end process for firefox. It was working fine until about a month ago and didn't mess with the settings. don't know what happened.
Usually if Firefox doesn't start up properly it displays a crash dialog, so it's odd that yours is so... quiet.
You don't even get a tile/button on the Windows Taskbar? if you do get a tile/button on the Taskbar, and you hover over it, does it show a thumbnail of the window that should be open? In that case, please try the steps for an off-screen window: https://support.mozilla.org/questions/1149793
