My inbox is filled with 300+ copies of an Aug 19 email, and when I click "get messages" it simply adds another copy of the some old email.
It is now 8pm on August 21, about 57 hrs after the time of the email blocking my Thunderbird in-box. My email is coming to my phone, so it does not seem to be an ISP problem.

I'd suggest you go to your email provider's website, log in to your email account there and delete this repeating message.
