Microsoft Word crashes when I attempt to open attachments from thunderbird

When I try opening MS word attachments in Thunderbird, it sometimes causes Microsoft Word to crash. Does not happen all the time and not sure if it is a Thunderbird or Microsoft Word problem (MS word crashes not Thunderbird). Help appreciated.

What happens if you "Save As" the attachment and save them in Downloads, Desktop or Documents instead of opening them straight from Tbird (this opens them from the %TEMP% location)?
