When I start Firefox, it tells me it is strongly recommended that I update Firefox. Yet, it never connects to the update server after 20+ minutes. When I cancel and go to Help > Check for Updates, it downloads the update for 3.6.10 and then tells me I need to restart Firefox to install the update. When I restart, it shows me the progress bar for installing the update and then gives me the message that it is strongly recommended I update Firefox bringing me back to where I started.

I'm stuck with this problem as well, using Win XP sp3

Kill the process (in process manager) to stop the loop. In order skip the update and to keep working with 3.6.9, someone suggested deleting the update contents from:

C:\Documents and Settings\usernamehere\Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Mozilla Firefox

This is just to keep working with the old version, and hope the next update will be smoother. Or if you have time, uninstall FF and re-install it from a fresh installer (i recommend xmarks plugin to keep your bookmarks, history and such for a smooth transition).
