Everytime I download, or just activate the download window (Ctrl+J) Firefox will slow down, and then hang.

I have changed the download location and download settings several times already.

I also was able to click the "clear list" button in the download window before it slowed and hanged on me.

Hi,

Please also try deleting the downloads.sqlite in the Firefox Firefox Profile Folder after exiting Firefox. You can also open the folder through Firefox Help (Alt + H) > Troubleshooting Information > Open Containing Folder.
