Not sure if this is an extension (I can't find an applicable one listed) or a "feature". A Notes sidebar keeps popping up since - I thin - the last Firefox update. I can uncheck it in the View menu but it pops up again, e.g., when I do a Google search. How do I get rid of it permanently?

Yes that is from an extension. Disable or uninstall that Notes addon.

There are other things that need your attention.

Your above posted system details show multiple Flash Player and Shockwave for Director plugins.
You should remove the older versions.

  • Shockwave Flash 11.4 r402
  • Shockwave Flash 9.0 r45
  • Adobe Shockwave for Director Netscape plug-in, version 11.6.6.636
  • Adobe Shockwave for Director Netscape plug-in, version 11.6.5.635

You can set the plugin.expose_full_path pref to true on the about:config page to see the full path of plugins on the about:plugins page.

It is best not to leave that pref set to true as it exposes that full path to web servers via the navigator.plugins object, so reset that pref to false after you are done with the about:plugins page.

See "Manually uninstalling a plugin":
