how to stop opening home page every time I open a new page

I hate this new feature. How do I turn it off? Every time I open a new tab it also opens a new [home]page tab, even when multiple tabs are open.

I'm not sure I understand what you're seeing. When you create a new tab, Firefox generally displays the set of sliding panels (History, Top Sites, Bookmarks, etc.) in that tab until you go to a real address. But that isn't new... been that way as long as I can remember. What are you seeing that's different?
