In recent weeks, any new tabs that I keep in my browser for Youtube videos show an empty page after I quit Firefox, reboot the computer or wake it up from sleep. These tabs shows the "Youtube icon" (of a red rectangle and a white forward arrow) but the name of the tab is "New Tab", not the title of the video as it usually shows. When I click on the tab, the page is empty or sometimes, it goes to Youtube's home page. Tabs for Youtube videos that I have had up for some time (months) are still showing OK.

I am using Mac OS 10.11.2 and FF 43.0.4. My Firefox version is upto date.

Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Firefox Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode that temporarily turns off hardware acceleration, resets some settings, and disables add-ons (extensions and themes).

If Firefox is open, you can restart in Firefox Safe Mode from the Help menu:

  • Click the menu button New Fx Menu, click Help Help-29 and select Restart with Add-ons Disabled.

If Firefox is not running, you can start Firefox in Safe Mode as follows:

  • On Windows: Hold the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
  • On Mac: Hold the option key while starting Firefox.
  • On Linux: Quit Firefox, go to your Terminal and run firefox -safe-mode
(you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)

When the Firefox Safe Mode window appears, select "Start in Safe Mode".

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, theme, or hardware acceleration. Please follow the steps in the Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems article to find the cause.

To exit Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.

When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help others with the same problem.

Thanks for your quick reply.

I restarted FF in safe mode using the "If Firefox is open" procedure. I then selected 2 different youtube videos in two of the tabs, and then watched one of the videos. I then quit FF, waited about a minute and restarted FF in safe mode again. The tabs with the 2 youtube videos were blank again and with just the youtube logo showing in the tab along with "New tab" as the tab or page name. So the safe mode does not appear to solve the problem.

This sounds like a bug then. If you file a bug report on Bugzilla, the developers can certainly take a look into the issue.
