Why do my emails get deleted from inbox when I'm not using the program?

After leaving the program and coming back later only to find all my emails had been deleted from the inbox. I searched trash and junk folders and they were nowhere to be found!!

Is your account IMAP? If so synchronization with other devices or server retention policies apply.
