firefox does not copy findagrave.com photo to LibreOffice
I used to go to findagrave.com to copy photos {"Copy Image"} of headstones to my StarOffice and OpenOffice documents. For the last few weeks I have NOT been able to copy the photos to my documents. Also I have received the "Urgent Update" --- but I did not do it. I have not found any other problem using firefox in the last few weeks.
BUT the following WORK just fine:
Firefox --- work-around: "Save Image As", use "jpg" & copy the image from "downloads" to the document Google Chrome --- no problems Avast Safe Zoone --- no problems
Thanks, WDLIII

I don't know why bitmap isn't working for that particular picture but I think you said you could paste other pictures.
I believe when you paste as HTML, LibreOffice is using Windows components (the plumbing of IE) behind the scenes to retrieve the image, so it doesn't take advantage of what Firefox already has in cache and that's why it is slow.

What method have you been using to try to copy the image? If you right-click the image and Copy Image is not available, it can indicate that there is a transparent overlay in front of the image. This is common on sites that use a "lightbox" display because clicking there is a navigational layer (previous/next) in front of the image. Unlike some other browsers, Firefox doesn't let you right-click through a transparent layer.
For a more specific comment, do you want to provide a link to a page where the image can't be copies from the right-click context menu? (If there are multiple images on the page or you need to click something first, please give instructions on how to re-create the problem.)
By the way, if the "urgent update" was a brightly colored page with the Firefox logo on a weirdly named site, that's malware, definitely do not install that.
Hello, Here is what I've tried
Using firefox go to findagrave.com, fill in the form Name: Franklin Alexander Ligon
First Middle Last
Cemetery in:
Tennessee
click Search
click on "Ligon, Franklin Alexander" among the info is a photo of the gravemarker
right click on the photo left click on "Copy_Image"
Open OpenOffice for a Write Document click "Paste" NOTHING is displayed REPEAT the above but use Avast Safe Zone & Google Chrome AND The gravemarker WILL be displayed in OpenOffice.
using firefox go to findagrave.com, fill in the form Name: Cora Ligon
First Middle Last
Cemetery in:
Tennessee
click Search
click on "Ligon, Cora Lee" among the info is a photo of the gravemarker
right click on the photo left click on "Copy_Image" Open OpenOffice for a Write Document click "Paste" the photo is displayed
You suggested that there might be a transparent overlay on the image that would cause a problem under firefox. If this is the problem, is there a simple way to detect it. Is there a way around this problem? I like firefox.
THANK YOU
The images should behave the same (there's no overlay as far as I can tell). I tested using Microsoft Word instead of OO Writer, but Firefox should have put the same kinds of content on the clipboard in each case.
Does it make any difference if you open the document first before copying the image?
Does it make any difference if copy the image "stand alone"? To do that:
right-click the image > hold down Ctrl and click View Image
That should open the image in a new tab.
right-click the "stand alone" image and Copy Image
Does that paste any differently in Writer?
Please do not kill me --- I am using LibreOffice 5.1, NOT OpenOffice.
Does it make any difference if you open the document first before copying the image?
use LibreOffice to open test document go to findagrave go to Franklin Alexander Ligon in Tennessee right click on photo left click on "Copy_Image"
go to document right click paste {NOTHING}
Does it make any difference if copy the image "stand alone"? To do that:
right-click the image > hold down Ctrl and click View Image That should open the image in a new tab. {YES} right-click the "stand alone" image and Copy Image {OK}
Does that paste any differently in Writer?
The image did not paste into LibreOffice word.
BUT it will paste into WordPad, using your above steps.
Again I am sorry that I told you I was using OpenOffice --- I am using LibreOfice.
Thank You for your help
LibreOffice has a close familial relationship with OpenOffice, so I would expect them to behave similarly.
One issue that sometimes arises is that the receiving application prefers a certain format but for one reason or another, there is a problem with that format. Possibly Writer prefers HTML.
Could you try using Edit > Paste Special in Writer to see whether picture or bitmap is an option? https://help.libreoffice.org/Common/Paste_Special
IT WORKS!!!, THANKS Using "Paste Special" selected "HTML format without comments" this did paste the picture into LibreOffice Word. The only problem is that it took about 18 seconds --- but IT WORKED. Thanks again
Did Paste Special have an option for pasting as a picture or bitmap? That might be faster than embedding a link to the image and then fetching it again in the background, which I think pasting as HTML may cause.
If the picture/bitmap option is missing for this one particular image, there could be a glitch in Firefox -- maybe that particular image is too big? -- that requires further investigation.
LibreOffice does have the following options: Paste Special:
Unformated Text More Options: HTML format HTML format without comments bitmap
there is no option for pasting as a picture
Right Click on Franklin Alexander Ligon grave stone click on View Image Info The following is displayed:
JPEG Image Size: 3,704.41 KB Associated Text: Franklin Alexander Ligon
went back and copied the photo, then pasted in LibreOffice as Paste Special, More Options, bitmap, After three minutes I gave up –- NO Image displayed.
Then, pasted in LibreOffice as Paste Special, More Options, HTML without comments In about 18 seconds the Image Appears.
I guess I will live with this. Thank you for all the effort that you have put forth.
