I am not able to see the remote content of messages, the preferences button in the warning doesn't show any preferences - it used to let me select "allow this time"

To diagnose problems with Thunderbird, try the following:

Restart Thunderbird with add-ons disabled (Thunderbird Safe Mode). On the Help menu, click on "Restart with Add-ons Disabled". If Thunderbird works like normal, there is an Add-on or Theme interfering with normal operations. You will need to re-enable add-ons one at a time until you locate the offender.

is the button there?

Yes, the button is there. By the way, the drop down "Tags" doesn't work either...

Excellent advice, working well now....

Thank you Matt -- you nailed it!

What add-on was it?

haven't determined which one yet. fully working in safe mode for now, slowly adding back add-on at a time. none of the ones I have had look suspect - nothing exotic

It might just have needed a start in safe mode. Sometime that does it and we do not know why. But if you determine a cause please post. We only learn for the successes.
