Thunderbird mailing list entries get surreptitiously replaced or added with no discernible pattern

I've setup various mailing lists (aka distribution lists). However, I notice that sometimes Thunderbird will add or replace an existing entry in the mailing list with other people. For example, my School Buddies mailing list might suddenly include someone from my address book that is NOT a School Buddy. It really makes the mailing list functionality unsafe to use.

Not sure if this matters, but I had Automatically add outgoing e-mail address to my: Collected Addresses turned on. Other hypotheses might be a bug around functionality related to the display or nickname perhaps?

A workaround which I'm using is to save your email list in a .txt file as a comma separated value (csv) string. Make sure that the email addresses have no spaces between them e.g. person1@mozilla.org,person1@mozilla.org

Then, just copy-and-paste this csv string into the To: field of Thunderbird and press enter. TB will generally parse out the email addresses into separate To: entries.
