The sign in field (loginname and password) will not appear, while in the background I can see the thunderbirdapplication (my e-mail, folders etc).

Are you sure you have the correct settings for the incoming server? Instead of port 587 SSL/TLS security, I believe it should be either port 143 STARTTLS or port 993 SSL/TLS.

Port 587 is generally used for the outgoing server, as you already have.
