Firefox 57 with Intel 620 Gpu: no VP9 support on Youtube

I think this is normal behaviour on the configuration below but let me describe and check with you. My notebook has an Intel I7-7700U with Intel 620 GPU on Win 10 Fall Creators 16299.192 with latest Intel GPU driver installed (23.20.16.4849). Firefox has hardware acceleration enabled.

All the Youtube videos are hardware decoded but the codec used is AVC.1 as I can see using nerd statistics on each video. No video use VP9 codec and infact opening the youtube.com/html5 all the codecs are checked except the WebM VP9 one that has a red exclamation mark (while older VP8 has not).

Searching on the Internet Intel 620 GPU support VP9 hardware coder but it seems that Firefox 57.x on my laptop is not enabled as showed by Youtube on their compatibility check page.

Is it a normal behaviour? Please note that even with previous version of Intel driver, Firefox has the same behaviour. Of course AVC.1 is great because is hardware decoded but I want to inspect this issue a little more sharing with you.

Thanks for your support! :)

media.mediasource.webm.enabled is set to true by default. If it is user set then it was modified.

Ok... I found that the property media.mediasource.webm.enabled was set by Firefox installation on false...I set to true and VP9 is enabled but..... during a video playback GPU is at 20%....and CPU is at 15% at least so the question is: is VP9 on Intel 620 hardware accelerated via GPU or not? And why Firefox decided to set VP9 disabled by default on this configuration?

I know that but this was a fresh installation of Firefox since a few months and I can't remember I modified this field intentionally. BTW it's done

I do not think You are right. This is what i see on my Windows 10, Firefox 58.0.2:

default, false (disabled)

#367259 மூலமாக திருத்தப்பட்டது

See:

  • Bug 1261273 - MSE with webm/vp9 should be automatically enabled on platform with VP9 hardware decoder
  • Bug 1260305 - VP9 Estimizer enables VP9 even when media.mediasource.webm.enabled = false
  • Bug 1230265 - VP9 Estimizer: isTypeSupported should test whether machine can decode 720p VP9 in real-time
