Open typed URL in new tab

I would like Firefox to open a typed URL to open it in a new tab. My bookmarks open in new tab, I can right click on link for new tab, but unless I press Alt/Enter typed URLs overlay existing active tab. I really don't want to add an extension. I see there are some addon available, but don't want to add a bunch and they all are wanting access to all data in all active tabs.

Is there a setting for what I am trying to do?

I am on FF 59.0.1 64 bit, using NoScripts and HTTPS Everywhere on Windows 7.

Hi, it could be that Noscript is breaking that. Firefox can open links in a page to a new tab provided you have checked the box in Options --> General --> Tabs --> Open links in tabs instead of new windows. If this is not working let us know.

Please update your Flash 28 Flash Player Version: 29.0.0.113 Current Version https://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/otherversions/ Step 1: Select Operating System Step 2: Select A Version (Firefox, . . . .) Note: Other software is offered in the download. <Windows Only>

Please let us know if this solved your issue or if need further assistance.

I have that box checked, but even in safe mode it stills doesn't open typed URL in a new tab, it does open in a tab, just same tab that was active. And that is what that options seems to say. It says "Open links in tabs instead of new windows". It does not say new tabs.

Please , 7mins to do : uninstall Firefox. Then Delete the Mozilla Firefox Folders in C:\Program Files , C:\Program Files(x86) & C:\ProgramData Then restart system. Then run Windows Disk Cleanup. (Note: This should be Pinned and run Weekly, If never done below expect 10's of gig's(Win10)) Then run it again and click the button that says Cleanup System Files. Note: your Firefox Profile is saved. But you should make a back up before you do :

Reinstall with Current Release Firefox 59.0.1 with a Full Version Installer

Please let us know if this solved your issue or if need further assistance.

I compulsively hold down Alt when I launch URLs from the address bar, when I'm viewing a page or a new tab. (Holding Alt in a new tab just uses the new tab, so there are no tabs wasted in that scenario.) But yes, our left thumbs could use a break.

Are you feeling impatient and slightly adventurous? The beta version of Firefox (future Firefox 60) now has a preference for this. I have not tested it myself.

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button promising to be careful or accepting the risk.

(2) In the search box above the list, type or paste URLB and pause while the list is filtered

(3) Double-click the browser.urlbar.openintab preference to switch the value from false to true

I don't know whether that would take effect immediately, or only in new windows, or only after exiting and restarting Firefox.

Since that beta is less than two weeks old, it might be too soon to make it your "daily driver," but I leave that up to you. Perhaps just knowing help is on the horizon will get you through the dark times.

Even though I cannot test in beta, I do have "Nightly" (future Firefox 61) installed so I can test things without disrupting my normal experience (it doesn't overwrite your regular Firefox, but you need to give it its own settings folder and heavily customize the shortcut).

And:

(A) For keyboard interaction, the new preference works the way you would expect, reversing the behavior of Enter and Alt+Enter

  • Pressing Enter loads the address in a new tab
  • Pressing Alt+Enter loads the address in the same tab

(B) For mouse interaction, such as clicking a selection on the drop-down or clicking the "go" button, the interaction with the Ctrl button (on Windows) works the way you would expect

  • Clicking loads the address in a new tab
  • Ctrl+clicking loads the address in the same tab

(C) No need to restart Firefox after toggling the preference from false to true, it works immediately

So it should be solved very well in Firefox 60.
