Thunderbird freezes when starting new mail or reply

Last few days Thunderbird started crashing on Ubuntu 16.04. Receiving mails and reading works OK but soon as I try to reply or send new mail it just freezes and only Force Quit works. What to do?

The first diagnostic is always to restart with add-ons disabled (it is on the help menu) most oddities like that have their source in add-on on Linux machines.
