How to delete bookmarks that are listed in a column below all my assigned folders

Cannot determine how to delete bookmarks that are listed below my designated folders. See attached screen shot. There is a list of 24 such bookmarks. When I highlight a bookmark in this column it simply takes me to the URL. I want to delete, not visit. Please help.

Thanks.

Hi bread1, you are close, but in the left column, click Bookmarks Menu -- and then what appears on the right side should exactly match the drop-down menu.

If you want to delete them one by one, just right-click and select Delete. If you want to do many, Open the Bookmarks Manager; Press the Alt or F10 key to bring up the toolbar, and select Bookmarks. Hot key is <Control> (Mac=<Command>) <Shift> B.

Where are the bookmarks that show in the screenshot located and where are you opening this list? Is that in the Library or in the Sidebar or on the Bookmarks Toolbar or in the Bookmarks menu (main Menu bar) ?

The list I am having trouble editing is shown on the second attached screenshot. The list is located below the folders of other bookmarks. This second screenshot is accessed by clicking on Bookmarks in the top menu.

I can delete bookmarks that are located within any of the folders, however I cannot delete any from the list below the folders.

I cannot highlight or click on any of those bookmarks without it taking me directly to the URL.

I was already suspecting that this is about the Bookmarks menu drop-down list.

The main Firefox Menu bar is under control of the Mac OS, so you won't be able to remove items in the Bookmarks drop-down list. You will have to use the Bookmarks Manager (Library) or the Bookmarks sidebar to remove bookmarks located in the Bookmarks Menu folder.

Unfortunately that does not work either. See attached screenshot of the Library. You can seen that the only bookmarks that show are those that are assigned to a folder. The ones I want to get rid of are located outside of folders.

Clearly I can delete those located within folders, however the ones I want to discard are not there and it appears ther is no way to access them to delete.

Are you suggesting that I contact Apple to see how a deletion from this lower list is done?

Hi bread1, in the Library, in the left column, click Bookmarks Menu to list out the contents of that specific "container".

Well, unfortunately none of the bookmarks I wish to delete are located in a "container".

As you can see from the highlighted red circles on the first attachment, the Bookmarks dropdown menu screenshot, I have fourteen "containers", 13 named and one entitled "Other Bookmarks".

The ones I want to delete are in the list located below the "containers". Highlighted by the red arrow.

As you can see from the screenshot of the sidebar in the second screenshot, the listed bookmarks which are not contained within a "container" are not shown.

Therein is the problem.

Hi bread1, you are close, but in the left column, click Bookmarks Menu -- and then what appears on the right side should exactly match the drop-down menu.

There are three bookmarks root folders in the All Bookmarks folder where you can create new bookmarks and new folders. You can only store bookmarks and bookmark folders in one of these root folders.

  • the "Bookmarks Toolbar" folder stores the bookmarks that you see on the Bookmarks Toolbar (Firefox -> Options or View -> Toolbars)
  • the "Bookmarks Menu" folder stores bookmarks that show in the Bookmarks menu drop down list
  • the "Other Bookmarks" folder (previously named "Unsorted Bookmarks") stores bookmarks that are created by clicking the star on the location bar and bookmarks created otherwise (right-click context menu and Bookmarks menu)

The bookmarks in the screenshot that shows the Bookmarks Menu drop-down list are are thus most certainly located in the Bookmarks Menu folder and you need to select this folder in the left panel in the Library to make its content appear in the right panel.

Thank you, thank you. Most helpful. This has cleaned up my Bookmarks menu considerably. Plus I learned much about the ins/outs of Firefox.
