Are you sure that you visited that site in a Private Browsing tab?

I have just opened a new Private browsing tab, visited a website (https://arstechnica.com) and the site does not appear on my homescreen or in my browsing history.

I recomend that you try. Firefox Preview is available to install from the Google Play Store.
