Why "document.pdf"

When a pdf is opened in a new firefox tab and then saved on the computer, the file is automatically named document.pdf, even though other browsers, safari and chrome, give the file the name that is in the title tag (ie also on the firefox tab). Why is that? Is it the creator of the pdf who forgot something or is it mozilla who prevents something?

Hi camilla5, it varies among different servers. You definitely should not see a generic name like "document.pdf" 100% of the time. Are there particular sites where you notice this problem?

Note: if the forum detects an address of a non-Mozilla site, your post will be diverted to the spam link moderation queue and be delayed in appearing. Don't panic. We'll see it eventually.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) or if hardware acceleration or userChrome.css is causing the problem.

  • switch to the DEFAULT theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Themes
  • do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Safe Mode start window
