Using iMac with OS 10.6.7. I made the mistake before of trying the Beta ver and same thing happened. But at least back then I could download the older version and recover my bookmarks. (i was finally able to get the older ver 3.6 back up.) Still, I can't import from HTML file or from back-up. Pls help, all my history is lost and i need those bookmarks to do my work!

A possible cause is a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.

Make sure that you not run Firefox in permanent Private Browsing - Use Firefox without saving history mode.

  • You enter Private Browsing mode if you select: Firefox > Preferences > Privacy > History: Firefox will: "Never Remember History"
  • To see all History and Cookie settings, choose: Firefox > Preferences > Privacy, choose the setting Firefox will: Use custom settings for history
  • Uncheck: [ ] "Permanent Private Browsing mode"

All of that is already done. Using Custom Settings for History with all of those options checked. Don't see the place to check "Permanent Private..." anywhere!. Any other ideas?

Sorry, in Firefox 3.6.x it is named "Automatically start Firefox in a private browsing session" and that entry doesn't have a check-mark in your screenshot, so that is OK.

Did you check my first link for problems with places.sqlite and renamed or removed that file otherwise?

Yes, thanks. I did go through all the usual recommendations that are listed in that online help file. Each time I try to restore or copy my previous places file or bookmarks file, it looks like it will upload, then it just doesn't import them.
