Take care not to use any option from Windows or Firefox that deletes personal information, because that will destroy settings, bookmarks and passwords.
Possible security related software is preventing changes or an update.

Hi,
You can also try to download the latest and update: https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/
Thank You for your reply
I have uninstalled 8 and installed from the 13.0 files, but no change. It still says it needs updating though it does suggest 12 (this I attempted previously)

Our posts crossed, if you do update from an older version it may possibly initially update only as far as 12 and then need a further update to 13
It is still possible the main problem is security related software blocking or even reverting changes.
There is probably no need to uninstall Firefox, ordinarily newer versions will install over older versions as will be mentioned in the articles I linked to. (Or ones they in turn link to).
Is the update message appearing on a website?? Your browser user agent appears to be corrupt. You can try to Reset all the filtered useragent values in about:config. After opening about:config you can filter by starting to type in useragent.
Thank You both for your timely advice
The solution, lay in the use of 'run as administrator'
Glad we helped, and thanks for posting back.
