It was Adobe's decision to not develop new versions of Flash for linux, you should complain to them.

However, Flash 11.2 is being maintained for Firefox by Adobe, you should be using that.

Flash is still supported just not to the same degree as Windows and Mac OSX as Adobe has not provided 11.3 and newer versions for Linux. Currently the version for Linux is 11.2.202.270 security update as per http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/

So now we're caught in the adobe/flash/java, codec, & html5 wars. YouTube tells me to upgrade my flash, Adobe doesn't support Linux at all now (no updates that qualify for YouTube), and Mozilla doesn't support html5. Where does that leave us, if we don't like IE or Chrome?

opensuse 12.2 + Firefox 20.0

Firefox does support HTML5, but only specific formats and that doesn't include MP4 as is used by YouTube when other formats like WebM aren't available.

YouTube works for me with Flash 10.3 and Flash 11.2 versions, so that shouldn't be a problem.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe mode start window or otherwise make changes.

Make sure that you haven't joint HTML5 on YouTube as that may send MP4 files or other formats that Firefox doesn't support.

Cor-El: What OS are you using?

Still on 32 bit OpenSUSE 11.4 (need to update now that GC complains that it no longer support this OS, although still supported via Evergreen).

Prepare for a rude shock. As usual, something that works will be "improved" until it breaks.

Hello: Since my last post, I have upgraded (clean install) to opensuse 12.3, and mostly it works! Youtube videos play, and even though I don't understand how, I got over my shock and breathed a sigh of relief!

Thanks, all....
