How do I set up the 9 "home" pages on the "New Tab"

There are 9 "home" squares to pin 9 sites on the "New Tab", for easy access for favorite sites. How can I pin these to stay in place, when I cannot even get them to show up in the blank spot? I know how to "pin" tabs at the top and I know how to "pin" a page on the "New Tab" when it shows up, but I cannot force a page to show up in the blank spot.

Here's how you can pin a website to the new tab rectangles:

  1. Open a new tab.
  2. Go to your bookmarks and find the website you want to pin.
  3. Drag the bookmark onto the space you want to pin it on.
  4. Repeat.

The thumbnails might not show up right away. Open the websites with missing images, just the pages they link to (don't go to sub pages), then restart firefox. The thumbnails should be created now. If there are still some that are missing, they're probably linking to a secure website (https).

Hello,

I think you are searching for this:

Is the problem that when you pin a page it doesn't stick at all, or that the page title is there but the thumbnail image is missing?

Some external security/privacy/utility software may protect you from unwanted settings changes by wiping out your settings file each time you exit and restart Firefox. If you use Advanced SystemCare, for example, you may want to disable the "surfing protection" feature.

You can change the order of the boxes on the about:newtab page and drag an item to a different tile to pin it to that position or you can remove a website by clicking the close X to block that URL.
You can drag a bookmark or history item and drop them in a tile on the about:newtab page to pin them and have your own favorites sites showing.

Changes made manually on the about:newtab page are stored in the browser.newtabpage.pinned (default = [null]) and browser.newtabpage.blocked prefs that you can check/modify on the about:config page.

First of all, I want to thank everyone for their help. But I guess I am not explaining myself succinctly enough. I have about 10 sites that I have pinned at the top of my home page and know how to add tabs on the top, to add new pages. I know how to add tabs and pin them at the top of my home screen page. The issue I am having is, I am trying to fill in the 9 blank boxes, that show up when I click on the "plus" sign to add a new tab. I have 4 spots filled in with 4 of the pages I want visible on my home page screen, and the site shows correctly and perfect - just what I want. I have the Google page set in one of the boxes and I can see it as soon as I turn on my computer, but I wanted to add GMail to another of the 9 blank spots on the "New Tab" page. I have it pinned in one of the blank spots and it says "GMail" in the bottom right corner, but the spot is still entirely blank. There is no picture showing, of the "GMail" page - just a blank box. I do not know how I got those 4 sites to show up as the site itself and not as a blank white space. I have tried several ways to re-create what I did the first 4 times.

It is possible that you have pinned a page that is retrieved via a secure (https) connection in this case you won't get a thumbnail in a tile on the about:newtab page. Only pages that come via an open http connection show a thumbnail.

How about trying this; Create a folder in the bookmarks and store those sites there. Or, you can put them in the bookmark toolbar.

Thanks FredMcd, but I already do have these in a folder on my Favorites. I just wanted a quick start to certain sites. I am giving up. If they appear, they appear, I am not going to waste any more time on trying to figure it out. Anyway, Thank you to everyone that tried to help out.

Thank you so much Grad You explained it so I could get it through my thick head. Your instructions worked. Thank you again
