Firefox resets my display and rearranges my icons

Whenever I start FF, V29, all my four displays blank out, and reset themselves. In the process, all my Icons get rearranged.

This is a real PITA as I have Very Many Icons, and I do a lot of stuff.

How can I prevent Firefox from resetting my display(s)?

Thanks, Mark.

Four displays, wow. I have no personal experience with that kind of setup. Two thoughts:

(1) Could you check to make sure that Firefox does not have any settings on the Compatibility tab of the shortcut you use to start the program? You can right-click the icon > Properties > Compatibility tab. Make sure nothing is reverted to an earlier version of Windows and no alternate resolution is specified.

(2) Consider disabling Firefox's use of hardware acceleration in case that is a factor. You can do that in the Options dialog here:

"3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Options > Advanced

On the "General" mini-tab, uncheck the box for "Use hardware acceleration when available"

That will take effect the next time to you exit and start Firefox up again.

Also, any reason you're still on Firefox 29? The current version is 33 and Mozilla discloses security flaws after each new release. If something is holding you back from upgrading, please let us know so we can suggest solutions or workarounds.

Or if you just haven't gotten notification of an update, you can get the update from the "About Firefox" dialog (either):

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > About Firefox
  • (menu bar) Help > About Firefox
