How can I disable 2 step Verification on Thunderbird

I have been trying and trying for hours to remove the 2 step verification from my computer. Every time I open my email I put in my password and then a minute later I get the message 'Sending of password for user *my username* did not succeed. Mail server *Server name* responded: Authentication failed.' Then it asks me to enter a new password or retry. But, clicking either option will just cause the entire thing to repeat itself. I'm sick and tired of not being able to get my messages on my computer and just and to get rid of the 2 step Verification. And, please, I'm not a computer person, I need STEP by STEP instructions on how to do this.

Okay, I told my friend about it and they just figured it out. Somehow the password was set to one I had a long time ago and changes so we fixed it.

Sorry you're having this issue. I'm going to assume you are using Gmail as your email provider, so the following instructions will be for that. If you use another provider, let me know so I can get you correct instructions.

Ok, so the first thing we will need to do is visit the Google 2-Step Verification page and hit "get started" in the top right corner. At this point you may need to sign-in to your Google account if you are not already signed in.

Once you get to the next screen, you should see "2-Step Verification is: ON" towards the right side of the screen. To disable it, click "Turn off", and then "Turn off" on the window that pops up. Thunderbird should now work correctly.

I would however recommend that you not disable 2-Step verification and instead create an App-specific password. This will keep your account safer and Thunderbird will still work properly. If you would like directions on how to do this, let me know as I would be happy to assist!

Is this for Gmail? There's a setting in Gmail to allow older mail clients such as Thunderbird to connect.

Background: Google only wants you to connect with applications that use the newer OAuth 2.0 protocol. Thunderbird, Microsoft Outlook, and some other mail clients do not support that. So you need to change a setting in Gmail to "Allow less secure apps".

Here are some related articles:

I don't think this has anything to do with Google at all. I haven't seen any connection between my Google and my Thunderbird account.

Then maybe you should give a hint as to who your email provider is. 2 step verification is normally a gmail thing any the g stands for Google. You go to great lengths to remove "server name" in your original post. This is not helping get you a resolution. I guess the next question is what in this process indicates to you that 2 step verification is involved? Is your email password just not working any you are making terms up to describe that?
