You alredy answerd this question, but it didn't solve my problem completly. You send me this: "Is it set up here: Tools > Options > Attachments Under 'Content Type' Microsoft Office Excel 2010 workbook Action: Use microsoft Office excel' Note you can click on the action to see a drop down selection if you need to change it. then click on OK

If it is not there then you need to set it up.

right click on attachment and choose 'open' a window pops up asking what to do. choose 'Open with' and either 'Microsoft Open XML converter' (I have MS Office 2007 so can to use that option) or better still select 'Microsoft Office Excel'

If the option is not available click on 'Other' See if option is now available or click on 'Browse' and in Microsoft Office, locate the Excel.exe file (it might be in a folder called 'Office 12 or another number) and click on 'Open' select: 'Do this automatically for files like this from now on' and click on OK"

But it is not working. When I do this, it works just for one file type.

Example: when i do this for .docx, select microsoft office word 2010 to open it, it works fine, but when trying to open .xlsx it opens also in word. It does not offer open with or other choises, just runs word and displays error that it cannot read it.

Best regards

Martin

Please post image showing this window: Tools > Options > Attachments > Incoming tab

Here is the image. I was trying to add .xlsx to the list, butt notnihg. And when I delete this value and start .xlsx and make it open with excell, than there is no way to add .docx. One excludes the other.

OS is win 7 pro x32. Office is 2010 profesional.

Thanks for your reply.

re: when I delete this value and start .xlsx and make it open with excell, than there is no way to add .docx.

According to the image you supplied: The .docx has already been added and Thunderbird will use Microsoft Word to open it. So you do not need to add it again or remove it from the Options/Attachments. You have completed this task.

I was hoping to see two entries and the action appilied to each. But, as you have either deleted the .xlsx or not added it, you must add it again.

re: I was trying to add .xlsx to the list, You add it to the list by: Locate email with .xlsx attachment. right click on .xlsx attachment and choose 'Open' a window pops up asking what to do. choose 'Open with' and select 'Microsoft Office Excel' - sometimes this is the auto action offered.

If the option is not available click on 'Other' See if option 'Microsoft Office Excel' is available to select, if it is not available click on 'Browse' In 'Program Files' or it may be 'Program Files(x86)' if running 64 bit OS

click on 'Microsoft Office' folder click on 'Office 14' folder - (I believe MS Office 2010 uses Office 14 folder) select 'Excel.exe' file and click on 'Open' select: 'Do this automatically for files like this from now on' click on OK"

Then go and look in Tools > Options > Attachments. Post image of that window - same as before.

I did all that, more than once. Not working. When attachments is set up like I posted, and right click on .xlsx document and open, it opens in word directly, no menu, no open with, no nothing.

Thanks for your help, I'll simply use another email browser.

Open the profile folder (select Help/Troubleshooting Information, click Show Folder), exit TB, delete mimeTypes.rdf, restart TB, and open an attachment and set the default application as above.

Nope, problem stil persist. If I set up word as a default program to open .docx, automaticly .xlsx is trying to be opened with word to.

Take your XLSX file and save it to your desktop. Double click on it.

Is Word or Excel opening?

Excel, file association is ok. Even tried with Incredimail free. everything works ok there, butt I like Thunderbird better so I would like to solve this problem. The weirdest thing is that this problem is on a laptop which I installed from a disk immage. It is one of five exactly the same laptops, and all installed from same immage, and only this one has a problem with it,other 4 are ok.

Let me give you a little more info:

Laptop is Acer Aspire E1-522 OS is win 7 pro Office 2010 pro Installation of all suplemental programs and Thunderbird I installed from ninite.com

I've tried everything you listed. Even tried to swich disks between 2 laptops, to rule out any hardware problem of some sort. As I mentioned before I tried installing Incredimail free just for the test, everything works in it. File association is ok every file is opened with its program when on desktop or other place. Why is this a problem with those files I dont know. Other files .xls and .doc and .pdf work just fine. If there was an option to manually add file extentions in Tools > Options > Attachments it would solve the problem. I'm all out of options. If you can think of something let me now.

Thanks for all your help and your time.

Sorry on grammar mistakes ect... english is not my native language.

Best regards
