Multiple search bar - each tab has its own search bar

Firefox has global search bar - no matter how many tabs open all of them will have one search bar with the same search request.

What should one does to have a new and empty search bar for a new tab?

In other worlds I would like to open a new Tab with new search bar with empty field.

Thanks in advance

Thanks. I solved my problem.

I removed it and start to enter search string to the URL field. Firefox uses default search engine. I am happy.

Type about:newtab in the URL bar and hit Enter.

Search Bar right at the top - correct? Is that what you see when you open a new tab?

That is the default for when a new tab is opened. If that isn't what you see, the browser.newtab.url pref in about:config has probably been changed.

I was not clear enough probably, sorry.

I would like to have new and empty search bar when I click "+".

Now when I click "+" I get new Tab, but search bar has a "searched string", because search bar is the same for all Tabs.

You can check it for your self = write something in search bar field, do not press enter, then click "+", you will get new Tab and search bar field will not be empty.

I am talking about Linux version

Thanks in advance

Sorry, that doesn't happen on Windows installation of the official Firefox versions. Does your Linux version use the older Search Bar scheme? Or the new OneOffButton search scheme, that came about in Fx34? https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/search-bar-add-change-manage-search-engines-firefox

If it's the OneOffButton scheme, you can revert to the older scheme.

Open up about:config (typed in the Location Bar) Right-click and toggle this preference to false browser.search.showOneOffButtons Then restart Firefox.

Yes, it was OneOffButton scheme, I changed it to older one, but it didn't solve the issue - when I open new Tab its search bar is filled with search string.

Do you have any extensions installed? If so, which ones? Any that are "search" related?

Also, you could check the search prefs in about:config, other than that OneOffButton pref, to see which ones may show up as userset in the Status column.

Ok. I attached some files.

I have also video about this issue, but can't attach it

1st screenshot = those are plugins, not extensions! I'm leaning towards an extension doing that, more so now after looking at your prefs settings.

2nd = looks like you turned off browser.search.suggest.enabled = you shouldn't be getting any suggestions at all

and browser.search.showOneOffButtons isn't disabled

I have no experience with that pref not being disabled. I turned that pref off when I first saw it in Beta 34, because it totally screwed up the way I do searches with 35 search engines installed where as many as 5 use the same icon and there are 3 different groups of engines that have 2 or 3 of the same icon. Same domain but use different search parameters or terms.

One more thing - maybe the search engine you have selected is providing that "search" string. Google may do that if you don't have "suggestions" turned off in your Google+ prefs, iirc - especially if you are always logged into Google+.

Extensions Firefox = 35.0.1, Linux x86_64

Sorry, I don't have an .avi program or plugin installed on this old WinXP box, so I can't view that video. You'll have to wait for another contributor here to look at it - plus I have been sitting here for 5 hours now and need to give my old eyes a rest for a few hours.

Neither of those extensions should be involved. I use many simple "one feature UI addition / changes" extensions, too - they cause far fewer than the "including the kitchen sink" type extensions for me.

The search bar on the Navigation Toolbar is common for all open tabs. You would have to open a new window to get a new search search bar. You can open a tab with the about:home page to have a search bar on that page.

  • about:config: browser.newtab.url = about:home
