I'm on MacOS Yosemite. Been using Thunderbird since before it was called Thunderbird.

Thunderbird 38.1.0 did not download any mail. I reverted to (i think) 38.0.1 from backup, and made a note to skip 38.1.0.

Last night Tb updated to 38.2.0. I've received no mail since. The status bar says “Connected to [server]” and then nothing happens.

Hmm do you use SSL connection security? What mail provider? Do you use Anti virus software?

SSL/TLS. My POP server is si1.serve-you.net, my webhost. No special antivirus (of which I'm aware).

Hmmm, please check the error console as discussed here. http://thunderbirdtweaks.blogspot.com.au/2015/07/logjam-and-thunderbird.html
