when I click on update plugins or check plugins, it show's plugin unknown. Should I remove the unknown plugin ?

when I check that plugins are up to date and run the update most plugins come back status unknown. Does that mean they are in the wrong Browser ? should I remove them ?

All it means is that the plugin checking website is not aware of what the latest version of that plugin is, so it is unknown. If you know what the plugin is then leave it, if not, feel free to remove it.

The plugin check website only knows about a few commonly used plugin and flags other plugin as unknown.

  • Java, Shockwave Flash, Shockwave for Director, Windows Media Player, Silverlight, VLC, Adobe Reader, RealPlayer

As an editorial comment, if you ever discover an add-on with no apparent purpose, you should feel free to disable it (for plugins, set to "Never Activate") or remove it.
