It is the same as the Save File option, sorry for not mentioning that before. Instead of saving immediately, it should display the dialog to let you choose where and under what name to save.

Hi fawzi, there is a setting on the Options page to "Ask me every time" where to save your download. This displays a dialog that also lets you edit the file name. Could you turn on that setting and let us know whether that does what you need?

This article has the steps: Startup, home page, tabs, and download settings.

Actually the specific wording in my version of Firefox is: "Always ask me where to save files" but this may vary if you have a localized version.

HI Jscher2000,

yes i tried it but it did not work, and that's why aked. to be exact, i am not able to make my choice to always ask stick.

here is what i tried: 1- i checked that ask always box and went to download, and it did not ask me what name to give. 2- i thought maybe i need to restart firrefox, which i did, but it came up with that box unchecked.... so i am at loss... if this is that solution, how do i make it stick? hope you can figure what i am doing wrong... i am on firefox rev 43, and windows 10

When you change the setting, the change should take effect immediately. You shouldn't have to restart.

If Firefox forgets settings between sessions, there are a range of possible explanations. There is a support article on that: How to fix preferences that won't save.

We also have seen users with Advanced SystemCare and other security/privacy/utility software become frustrated because those programs may roll back settings changes to protect you from unwanted changes -- but they don't know which are wanted and which are unwanted. If you have a program with browser/home page/surfing protection, you may want to turn that off until everything is set just right.

I am using Norton something.... so i turn it off and restarted Firefox, and the box is now checked to always ask.

So i opened a page and tried a download, and i still get the same options that i posted in the image earlier. i.e. no "Save as" option.

is that option hidden, or would it be as obvious as the "Save File" option?

I can't believe we wasted so much time on this... i am sorry about that. i even went tried 3 other machines to get this right, and finally i thought i click on save and see what happens... and low and behold the "save as" dialog box appears....

well, thanks a lot for sticking with me and solving this.

regards
