Firefox has lost my settings such as a search tool; how do I restore the settings which have been lost?

I used to have Firefox exactly as I wanted it; homepage, a Yahoo search bar and drop down menus. A few days ago it managed to lose it all. I have found the drop-down menus and the bookmarks, but where had the rest gone, and how do I restore it?

My guess is that the Refresh feature ran. This can occur when a button appears saying you can speed up Firefox by restoring some default settings. Firefox moves your old settings folder (profile folder) to your desktop inside a folder named Old Firefox Data. Can you find that?

Meanwhile, you reinstall the Yahoo toolbar from the Add-ons site here: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/yahoo-toolbar/
